Help Keep Radar
Independent
Radar is designed, built, and funded by a single independent developer. It exists to keep people connected when networks fail — and it can only keep doing that with the support of the people who use it.
Radar has cost thousands of pounds to build and to run — and, to date, it has not made a penny of profit. Every hour of development, and every month of server and data-service bills, has been paid for out of pocket.
That was a deliberate choice. Radar has no investors, no shareholders, and no advertising-driven growth targets, and it does not sell your data. The trade-off is that the project has no financial cushion: its future depends directly on the people who find it valuable.
If Radar is useful to you, we would sincerely ask you to consider making a donation. Contributions of any size make a real difference at this stage, and they are the most direct way to ensure that Radar continues to be developed, maintained, and available.
App cost
Subscription cost
- UK VAT (20%, included in the price)£0.33
- Google Play fees (10% service + 5% billing, ex-VAT)£0.25
- HMRC income tax (45%)£0.63
- Data services & running costs£0.78
- The developer’s income£0.00
Illustration of a single £1.99 UK monthly payment through Google Play Billing, rounded to the nearest penny. Google’s fees are calculated on the price excluding VAT. The HMRC slice shows tax as if the whole remainder were profit; in practice costs are deducted first, and no income tax is due while the project runs at a loss.
Development
Engineering, testing, and maintenance across a wide range of Android devices and OS versions — including the unglamorous work of keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Aware, and background services reliable.
Commercial data services
Live maps, places, traffic, weather, and aircraft and marine data come from commercial providers that bill per request. These costs scale with every user and are paid in full by the project.
Servers & infrastructure
The cloud relay, push notifications, and databases that let Radar fall back to the internet when no nearby peers are in range, and keep emergency feeds current.
Wider device & language support
Translations, new-device compatibility work, and the testing needed to make Radar dependable for people in many countries, not just one.
Hosting & infrastructure
- Oracle Cloud hosting of the Oracle AI Database that stores and serves all of Radar’s data
- Oracle Cloud hosting of the compute server that runs the Matrix homeserver and other back-end services
- Google Cloud services, including push notifications, app crash reporting and translation
- Domain names and DNS
- Transactional email delivery
Paid data services & APIs
- Place and point-of-interest search, including emergency services such as hospitals, pharmacies and police stations
- Live traffic and road-incident data
- Weather forecasts and severe-weather alerts
- Live aircraft tracking
- Marine vessel search and positions
- Wi-Fi network location lookups
- Public webcam directories
- Rail and transport live-tracking feeds
Platform & promotion
- Google Ads, so that people who need Radar can find it
- Google Play developer account and app-store billing
- Development tools, testing devices and software licences
Many providers include a small free allowance, and Radar enforces daily limits on every metered service to keep costs under control — but usage beyond those allowances is billed, and the infrastructure above is paid for every month regardless of how many people use the app.
Radar is free to install, but the free version shows ads injected by Google, which Premium removes. Premium (£1.99/month) is the project’s main revenue stream — and only a fraction of each payment reaches the project. For a UK subscription payment through Google Play Billing:
- 20% UK VAT is included in the £1.99 price, not added on top. The VAT portion is £1.99 × 20 ÷ 120 = about £0.33, leaving about £1.66 excluding VAT. Google collects and pays this VAT to HMRC.
- Google Play’s 10% service fee plus 5% billing fee are calculated on the ex-VAT price: (£1.99 ÷ 1.20) × 15% = about £0.25, leaving about £1.41 before running costs and any tax on profit.
- Any profit that remains is then taxed by HMRC at the UK additional rate: 45% income tax (plus National Insurance) — about £0.63 of that £1.41 if it were all profit.
- Before any profit exists, that remainder must first cover the data-service, server, and development costs above.
With a single, modest revenue stream, subscriptions alone have not yet covered the cost of the project. A direct donation avoids Google’s fee (PayPal’s small transaction fee still applies), so more of what you give is available to keep Radar running.
- Your data is not the product. Radar is built for private, off-grid communication, with no tracking of your location for profit. (The free version does show ads injected by Google AdMob; they never use your Radar messages, contacts or precise location, and Premium removes them.)
- Resilience has to be funded. Tools that work during disasters, outages, and censorship need ongoing upkeep, not just a one-off launch.
- Direct support keeps decisions in users’ hands. Donations let the project prioritise reliability and safety over whatever generates the most revenue.
